This week, students from the MArch postgraduate program in Industrialized Architecture attended a Detail Design Class taught by Laura Bueno, an architect from the Fran Silvestre Arquitectos studio. The session focused on breaking down the technical and aesthetic complexity found in small-scale elements—those that have the greatest impact within systematized architecture—exploring how the detail serves as the fundamental unit ensuring the coherence of the entire architectural ensemble.

Laura Bueno delved into how systematization allows for the optimization of construction processes without compromising the formal purity that characterizes their architectural language. Through the design of specific details, the studio ensures that industrial components and standardized processes are assembled with handcrafted precision, allowing technology to serve both beauty and functionality.

A key point of the session was the analysis of spatial continuity through constructive detailing. Technical solutions were presented to hide window frames, integrate lighting systems, and resolve joints between materials in an almost invisible manner. This approach seeks to eliminate any unnecessary visual noise, allowing the detail to be precisely what facilitates a sense of “totality” and cleanliness.

Additionally, the studio’s internal work methodology was presented, where prototyping and material research play a crucial role. Designing details in systematized architecture requires a deep understanding of how different systems interact with one another. Students were able to understand that the success of these modular homes and advanced construction systems lies in a very rigorous preliminary technical design phase, where every joint and finish has been planned for perfect execution on-site.

To conclude, the class also addressed the importance of the human scale in architectural detailing. Despite dealing with highly technical and systematized systems, the ultimate goal is always to enhance the user experience.
