The Portuguese architect Eduardo Souto de Moura, awarded the Pritzker Prize in 2011, will serve as director of the Portuguese newspaper Público for one day as part of the publication’s 36th anniversary celebrations. The initiative is part of a special edition in which the newspaper invites a prominent figure from the cultural sphere to temporarily assume editorial leadership, offering a different perspective on the publication’s content and the themes it addresses.
The edition, which will be published on March 5, will revolve around the theme “A minha casa” (“My house”), an open reflection on the meaning of dwelling and the relationship between architecture, everyday life, and personal experience. From his trajectory as an architect, Souto de Moura approaches this concept not only as a physical or constructive matter, but also as an intellectual and emotional search connected to the way people relate to space.
In statements shared by the newspaper, the architect explains that his work is based on trying to discover what the right house is for oneself, understanding that this personal search can hold a universal value. This reflection places the architectural project in a deeply human realm, where design becomes a tool to explore more conscious and representative ways of inhabiting space.
Souto de Moura’s participation in this initiative highlights the close relationship between architecture and cultural thought. By assuming the direction of the newspaper for a day, the architect brings his critical perspective and sensitivity toward space into the editorial sphere, generating a dialogue between disciplines that invites reflection on how we construct our environments and our collective narratives.
With this special edition, Público celebrates its anniversary by opening its pages to a voice from the world of architecture, thus expanding the scope of cultural debate. The presence of Eduardo Souto de Moura reinforces the idea that architecture does not only construct buildings, but also shapes ways of thinking about territory, the city, and everyday life.
