Architect Emilio Tuñón has been appointed as a member of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando, a recognition that highlights a well-established trajectory within contemporary Spanish architecture. His incorporation into the institution not only acknowledges the quality of his built work, but also his contribution to architectural thought and to the education of new generations.
Tuñón’s professional career is closely linked to the studio he founded with Luis Moreno Mansilla in 1990, a period during which they developed a series of projects that quickly positioned them prominently within the architectural landscape. Works such as the Museum of Zamora, the Auditorium of León, or the Museum of Castellón demonstrate an approach based on geometric precision, constructive rigor, and careful attention to spatial experience, consolidating a practice that combined formal clarity with a strong cultural dimension.
With the turn of the century, his work gained greater international projection through projects such as the MUSAC in León—awarded the Mies van der Rohe Award—or the Royal Collections Gallery in Madrid, a large-scale and complex work that has become one of the most relevant architectural projects in recent Spain.
These are complemented by interventions in Galicia, Cáceres, and Madrid, reflecting a consistent understanding of architecture as a balance between context, structure, and expression. Following Mansilla’s passing in 2012, Tuñón continued his career independently, developing new projects that maintain the coherence of his architectural language. Among them are the Helga de Alvear Museum in Cáceres and the Arquia Foundation headquarters in Madrid, works that show an evolution combining rigor, formal synthesis, and a deeper exploration of space as built matter.
Alongside his professional practice, Tuñón has maintained an intense academic activity as a design professor, both at the Madrid School of Architecture and at various international institutions. His teaching work, together with numerous awards—including the National Architecture Prize—reinforces a trajectory that integrates practice, research, and education. His admission to the Academy thus recognizes a career that has successfully articulated architecture and thought, contributing decisively to contemporary architectural culture.
