The National Gallery in London has announced the selection of the winning proposal for the design of its new wing, a project aimed at expanding and updating one of the world’s most important museums. The international competition has concluded with the selection of Japanese architect Kengo Kuma, a leading figure in contemporary architecture and a lecturer in the MArch programs, whose proposal stood out for its sensitivity to context and its ability to reinterpret the institution from a contemporary perspective.

The intervention is conceived as an opportunity to redefine the relationship between the museum and the city, particularly in such a significant location as Trafalgar Square. Rather than a conventional extension, Kuma’s proposal introduces a reflection on how a historic building can evolve without losing its identity, establishing a balanced dialogue between the existing structure and the new addition.

One of the key aspects of the project is its focus on the visitor experience. The new wing will not only expand the exhibition spaces but will also reorganize circulation routes, improving clarity and continuity throughout the museum. The architecture is conceived as a sequence of spaces that guide the visitor, where light and materiality play a fundamental role in the perception of the artworks.

In line with Kengo Kuma’s architectural approach, the proposal embraces a design that integrates subtly into its surroundings, avoiding imposing gestures and prioritizing a closer relationship with human scale and materials. This approach envisions an extension that, rather than imposing itself, becomes a natural and respectful evolution of the historic building.

The selection of Kengo Kuma as the competition winner recognizes the quality of his proposal while also positioning the project within a broader architectural discourse that values the connection between tradition and contemporaneity.
