At the CC of Copenhagen Contemporary, the leading international art center in Copenhagen dedicated to installation art and located in a former welding hall in the industrial area of Refshaleøen, the project Earth/Tree, designed by Kengo Kuma and his studio Kengo Kuma and Associates, has been inaugurated. The project proposes a sensory experience that places the visitor at the center of an architecture built from material and perception. The intervention is conceived as an open environment to be explored and experienced, where the relationship between body, space, and nature takes on a central role.
The installation is structured through a series of wooden elements arranged to create a light and permeable system. This configuration allows light, air, and shadows to pass through the space, producing a constantly shifting atmosphere that evolves throughout the day. Architecture no longer acts as a boundary, but as a filter mediating between the environment and the visitor.
In Earth/Tree, materiality is understood as a means of activating experience. The wood, precisely crafted, conveys a sense of proximity and warmth while establishing a direct connection with the surrounding landscape. The use of natural materials reinforces the intention to create an architecture that engages with its context and evokes organic processes.
The project follows a line of work characteristic of Kuma’s practice, in which architecture is conceived as an extension of its environment. Through light and repetitive construction systems, space is defined through relationships rather than enclosed forms, resulting in structures perceived as fragments of a larger whole.
Earth/Tree reflects on the capacity of architecture to generate experiences beyond the visual. Movement, scale, and interaction with the environment turn the installation into a sensory device that invites visitors to inhabit space actively, establishing a direct connection between architecture, nature, and perception. The installation will be open to the public until February 21, 2027.
