On March 28, MoN Takanawa (Museum of Narratives) opened in Tokyo, a project designed by Kengo Kuma that proposes a new way of understanding exhibition space.

Far from the traditional museum model, the Museum of Narratives is conceived as a dynamic environment in which architecture, technology, and storytelling merge to create an immersive experience, placing the visitor at the center of the journey.

Located in the new Takanawa Gateway district, the project forms part of a broader urban development focused on cultural innovation. In this context, the museum functions not only as a container of works, but also as a device capable of interpreting Japanese culture through sensory stimuli. The space becomes an active medium that constructs narratives through the interaction between environment, technology, and user.

One of the most significant aspects of the project is its materiality. True to his trajectory, Kuma uses natural materials such as wood and stone, creating a warm and approachable architecture that engages with tradition. These elements are combined with advanced technological systems, such as integrated LED screens, establishing a balance between the physical and the digital that defines the building’s atmosphere.

The exhibition proposal of MoN Takanawa is based on the creation of immersive environments that allow visitors to experience the passage of time and the seasons. Through sensors and augmented reality systems, the space reacts to external climatic conditions and to the presence of visitors, continuously transforming itself. In this way, the audience ceases to be passive spectators and becomes an active part of the visual and sound narrative.

With this project, Kuma expands the boundaries of museum architecture, exploring new relationships between space, technology, and experience. MoN Takanawa proposes an architecture that is not only observed, but lived—where the building acts as an interface capable of connecting tradition and contemporaneity through a constantly evolving sensory experience.
