The renovation of the Central Pavilion in the Giardini of the Biennale has been inaugurated, representing the main intervention within its strategy for heritage renewal and the modernization of cultural infrastructures. This building, the historic core of the international art and architecture exhibition, thus regains its prominence after a comprehensive restoration process that seeks to balance the preservation of its architectural identity with the contemporary demands of art and sustainability.

The Central Pavilion occupies a fundamental place within the Giardini della Biennale, the site where the Biennale originated in 1895 and which today hosts numerous national pavilions. Over time, this building has functioned as the main venue for the international exhibition, housing the central show and structuring the visitor’s route. Its history is closely linked to the development of the Biennale, considered one of the most important artistic platforms in the contemporary world.

The architectural intervention has involved a comprehensive restoration of its original elements, together with a functional reorganization of the interior spaces. The clarity of the exhibition route has been reinforced, placing key spaces such as the Chini Room at the center of the layout, and creating more flexible areas that adapt to current curatorial needs. In addition, significant historical details have been recovered, integrating them with new technical solutions that improve the building’s performance.

Another central aspect of the project is its commitment to sustainability. The renovation has incorporated energy-efficient systems and architectural solutions aimed at reducing environmental impact, with the goal of achieving international standards such as LEED certification. New external structures have also been added— inspired by traditional Venetian “altane”— which expand the uses of the pavilion, including spaces for rest and complementary activities.

Overall, the renovation of the Central Pavilion responds to a need for conservation while redefining its role within the contemporary Biennale. This project strengthens the site’s capacity to host large-scale and complex exhibitions, while consolidating its symbolic value as the historical heart of the Biennale. The reopening of the building thus marks a new stage in the evolution of this event, maintaining an ongoing dialogue between tradition and innovation.
