During this edition of Architecture Week in Madrid, a tribute will be paid to the Portuguese architect and Pritzker Prize laureate Álvaro Siza, renowned for his poetic sensitivity and his contribution to the modern and contemporary architectural legacy.

Organized by the Arquitectura COAM Foundation and the Official College of Architects of Madrid, in collaboration with the City Council, this week turns the capital into the epicenter of architectural culture with more than three hundred activities, including lectures, workshops, exhibitions, and debates.

The Dean of the College of Architects emphasized that this edition does justice to Siza’s legacy by acknowledging his contemporary influence, and reminded the Mayor of the importance of resuming pending projects in Madrid — for example, the renovation of Plaza de Colón — as a testament to the city’s commitment to public architecture. In this sense, the tribute is not only retrospective but also forward-looking: it invites reflection on how to design cities that are more humane, contextually respectful, sensitive to human scale, and open to dialogue with their surroundings.

This tribute to Siza joins the recognition of another key figure in twentieth-century Madrid urbanism, Luis Gutiérrez Soto, offering the public an opportunity to explore not only formal excellence but also the social, cultural, and symbolic dimensions of architecture. In essence, Architecture Week seeks to awaken a deeper appreciation of the built environment and to connect — through the legacy of great masters such as Siza — the local with the universal.
