Between February 19 and 26, students from the MBA MArch Advanced master’s program in architecture, design and business administration travelled to Olot to take part in a workshop organized by RCR Arquitectes, recipients of the Pritzker Prize in 2017.

The experience took place at La Vila, a very special setting that provided the appropriate context for developing an approach to architectural design based on observation, sensitivity, and a direct relationship with the surroundings. The choice of this location responded to its capacity to foster an immersive experience, where contact with nature became an active tool within the learning process.

The workshop, entitled “Feeling the Place,” proposed an approach to architecture grounded in direct experience, inviting participants to reflect on the relationship between human beings and the spaces they inhabit. Throughout the week, students took part in various activities designed to expand their perception and understanding of the environment. Among them, a dance workshop led by choreographer Sílvia Brossa approached movement as a means of becoming aware of one’s own body in relation to space. At the same time, photographer Eugeni Pons conducted a workshop focused on observing and capturing the landscape, while philosopher Jordi Pigem offered a reflection on the relationship between thought, nature, and architecture, adding a conceptual dimension to the experience.

The setting of La Vila played an essential role in the development of the workshop. Located on an estate of approximately 140 hectares, this territory is characterized by the dominant presence of nature, where the landscape unfolds without significant alterations. This condition allowed students to distance themselves from the usual constraints of the urban environment and engage with a reality in which time and space acquired a different dimension. Direct experience of this context enabled a deeper understanding of how the environment influences architecture, both as a physical framework and as the very origin of the project itself.

Through this immersion, the workshop proposed a form of learning rooted in experience, where architecture was understood as a discipline that emerges from the relationship between the individual and the place. Beyond technical or formal aspects, the program focused on developing a sensitivity capable of recognizing the specific qualities of each environment. This approach enabled students to incorporate new tools for observation and reflection, essential for addressing architectural design from a more conscious perspective, closely connected to reality. The stay in Olot thus became an opportunity to pause, observe, and understand. In this context, learning expanded into a deeper reflection on the role of architecture and its capacity to establish a respectful and meaningful relationship with the natural environment.
