This unique space was conceived by Japanese architect Tadao Ando and fashion designer Issey Miyake with the goal of exploring the potential of design in everyday life and offering a new perspective on how we perceive the world and the objects around us.

The structure of the museum is characterized by its innovative and minimalist design. Most of the building is buried underground, with a stainless steel roof that folds like a sheet of paper, inspired by Miyake’s concept “A Piece of Cloth.” This 54-meter-long roof is one of the largest steel plates in Japan and was made possible thanks to the country’s advanced construction technology and the skill of the craftsmen involved in its execution.

Inside, the museum houses two galleries and a sunken courtyard illuminated by natural light, creating an atmosphere that invites reflection and contemplation. The exhibitions, which change periodically, focus on themes related to design and its impact on daily life, showcasing works by contemporary designers and artists. In addition, the museum hosts workshops and talks to encourage interaction and learning among visitors.

The name “21_21 Design Sight” reflects the intention to offer a vision beyond the conventional—a place where design can be experienced from a fresh and stimulating perspective. This space has become a reference point in the world of design, attracting visitors from around the globe who are interested in the intersection of art, architecture, and functionality.
