Casa da Arquitectura in Portugal will inaugurate the exhibition “Kengo Kuma: Onomatopoeia” on the weekend of October 4 and 5, dedicated to the renowned Japanese architect.
To celebrate this special occasion, a two-day programme has been prepared, full of activities open to the public, combining guided tours, workshops, lectures, and events for all ages.
On Saturday, October 4, the day begins at 4:00 pm with the official opening of the exhibition in the Nave Expositiva, followed by institutional interventions. The central highlight will take place at 6:00 pm, with a lecture by Kengo Kuma himself at the Álvaro Siza Hall, delivered in English with simultaneous translation into Portuguese. The day will conclude with a cocktail at 7:30 pm. Throughout the day, from 10:00 am to 10:00 pm, children aged 5 to 12 can take part in the activity “Architectural Backpacks” within the exhibition.
On Sunday, October 5, the activities continue with a wide range of options for audiences of all ages. Starting at 10:00 am, the children’s activity “Architectural Backpacks” will be repeated, alongside the special workshop “Onomatopoeias”, designed for children over 3 years old and adults. At 10:00 am a model-making masterclass will also begin in the Luís Ferreira Alves Hall, limited to 15 participants, teaching professional techniques for architectural model construction. At 11:00 am, there will be a guided tour of the exhibition led by Rita Topa, partner at Kengo Kuma & Associates.
In the afternoon, from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm, a second creative workshop entitled “Onomatopoeia Game” will take place, in which participants will transform sounds and sensations into miniature architectural objects, using simple materials to represent textures, emotions, and forms. With this diverse and engaging programme, Casa da Arquitectura offers a unique opportunity to explore the sensory and conceptual universe of Kengo Kuma, bringing his work closer both to specialized audiences and families.
