Barozzi Veiga Lecture

Alberto Veiga’s lecture, co-founder of Barozzi Veiga, introduced students to the work of his internationally recognised studio, awarded the Mies van der Rohe Prize.

It was an ideal opportunity for students to gain insight into how one of the most influential European studios today works, to understand their way of thinking about architecture, and to grasp the processes behind projects of remarkable conceptual and constructive precision.

During the talk, Alberto Veiga shared five projects that clearly reflect the diversity of scales, contexts and challenges the studio engages with. Among them were Abby Kortrijk and Kursaal Knokke-Heist, both in Belgium, where architecture enters into dialogue with highly sensitive historical and urban environments. In these projects, Alberto explained how the studio operates through a precise and restrained logic of intervention.

The lecture continued with the Göteborg Konstmuseum, a project in which the relationship with the existing building, the surrounding context, light and the visitor’s experience play a central role. Integrated into the rear of the main building, the proposal introduces a volume that adopts the scale of neighbouring constructions in order to remain discreet. This was followed by Oolite Arts in Miami, where the studio addresses a completely different context, both climatically and culturally, while maintaining its characteristic formal rigour. A project conceived for artists, as a place to work and to exhibit. In both cases, Alberto Veiga placed special emphasis on how each project is developed through an in-depth analysis of the site, the programme and the specific conditions that surround it.

Finally, the Art Institute of Chicago. In this project, Barozzi Veiga carried out a minimal yet highly significant transformation, focused on modifying elements such as doors and railings and on restoring the building’s original ceiling. Alberto explained how, through almost invisible gestures, it is possible to profoundly alter the perception of space, demonstrating that architecture does not always require large-scale operations to create impact.

Following the project presentations, a Q&A session took place in which students engaged in a very close and open conversation with Alberto Veiga. They discussed competition dynamics, how the studio approaches them, how to manage the time and energy they require, and Barozzi Veiga’s experience over years of intense and sustained work. This exchange allowed students to understand not only the built architecture, but also the professional reality behind it, bringing the lecture to a close with a reflection on the profession, perseverance and long-term coherence.
