The San Isidro sugar factory, located on the edge of the city of Granada and the Vega plain, has been the subject of intense architectural, urban, and heritage research and reflection.

This exploration has culminated in the publication La Azucarera de San Isidro, Granada: Studies on the Industrial Complex and Recovery Plan for a Site of Cultural Interest. The volume, published by the University of Granada Press and coordinated by architects and MArch lecturers Juan Domingo Santos and Carmen Moreno Álvarez, along with art historian Ángel Isac Martínez de Carvajal, is the result of years of work and direct engagement with this valuable industrial site.

More than a mere compilation of texts, the book represents a body of knowledge built from experience, fieldwork, and a deep commitment to the place. It includes a series of interdisciplinary studies on the sugar factory’s history, landscape, architecture, and industrial culture, as well as a master plan outlining its recovery as an active urban space. The publication acts as a bridge between the site’s productive past and its potential future as a center for innovation, sustainability, and culture.

The approach proposed by the coordinators is not merely academic: it is also a call to action, a document that articulates concrete proposals for the conservation and transformation of the site, respecting its heritage while addressing new urban demands. The sugar factory, declared a Site of Cultural Interest, is thus presented as a laboratory of ideas — a place with the potential to become a hub of exchange between the university, society, and the territory.

Although it was named Book of the Month in February, the publication is once again in the spotlight, especially now that the proposals it contains are beginning to take shape under the leadership of the University of Granada. This book not only documents a process but also invites participation in it, becoming an essential reference for those working on the recovery of industrial heritage from a contemporary and transformative perspective.
