As part of the MBA module of the MArch Advanced program in architecture, design, and business administration, students attended the Business Model class led by Maria Masià, Operations Director at Fran Silvestre Arquitectos.

This session represents one of the first approaches to the business component of the master’s program—an essential aspect for those who wish to undertake or manage projects within the fields of design and architecture.

During the class, students explored various business models applied to the sector, analyzing real examples from established studios as well as projects developed by MArch alumni. This approach allowed them to compare different forms of organization, specialization, and professional growth, providing a broad perspective on how to structure and sustain a practice in today’s context.

In addition to case analysis, the session focused on strategic tools such as SWOT and CAME matrices, which students used to evaluate strengths, weaknesses, threats, and opportunities in different business scenarios. These methodologies served as a starting point for understanding how to make informed decisions and design viable strategies.

The class concluded with a group reflection on the challenges each student will face throughout the course—from defining their own business model to making decisions that balance creativity and economic feasibility. This first immersion into the business world equips them with a broader perspective and concrete tools to approach their future projects.
