The creative studio CLAP Studio, winner of the 2023 National Design Award in the Young Designers category, gave a lecture for students from the various programs at MArch Valencia.
Led by co-founder Àngela Montagud, CLAP Studio shared some of their most representative projects with the students, as well as the methodology and strategy they follow to achieve such successful results in each one. The projects showcased are spread across the globe, from Hong Kong to Minsk, and can be categorized into retail and installations.
Among the installation projects is The Sanctuary of the Self x Homapal, an installation for CasaDecor in Madrid that uses completely reflective surfaces to simulate a bathroom, inviting visitors to reflect on self-image, external validation, and personal acceptance through visual distortions and water features. Another ephemeral installation is The Sea, created in Valencia for the World Design Capital 2022, which draws inspiration from the Mediterranean Sea. It uses overlapping welded mesh modules and floating spherical lights that simulate jellyfish to create a multifunctional set. A third one is Mist, an ephemeral urban monument and installation designed for Minsk Design Week in Belarus, which pays tribute to the buildings destroyed in World War II. The conceptual volume, made up of a structure of cubes, emulates the destruction caused by bombs, creating tiers and openings from which life bursts forth in the form of trees.
Regarding retail spaces, Àngela Montagud spoke about Little Stories, a 70 m² children’s footwear concept store designed in Ruzafa (Valencia) under the premises of play, simplicity, and adaptability. It features large windows, mobile displays, and magnetic plates that allow the space to be transformed, sparking children’s imagination. She also presented the Alohas Flagship, the first physical store for the fashion brand ALOHAS in Barcelona. Inspired by the volcanic landscapes of Hawaii, the space combines the raw brutality of nature with sophistication through sharp metallic furniture that emulates lava and skylights that simulate caves. Traveling abroad, Her is a fashion boutique and café in Hong Kong inspired by a sinuous and pure landscape that emulates the planet Mars. The space stands out for its red terracotta mountains, which serve both to display products and as seating to rest, offering a unique spatial experience.
She also shared the Oven project, which consisted of redesigning an electronic music club in Valencia. Inspired literally by the concept of an oven, they used stainless steel surfaces, red and black stained wood, and LED lights that simulate heating elements to evoke rising temperatures, vibration, and the transformation of the space. This naturally led to a discussion about their recent intervention at Spook Factory at the students’ request.
Finally, she spoke about the artistic-creative project currently being carried out by Jordi Iranzo, also a co-founder of CLAP Studio, using fishing nets that ultimately take the shape of chairs, which have already been presented at trade fairs.
