Concept Development Presentations

The students presented the exercise developed during the Concept Development classes, a process in which they put into practice everything explored in the sessions with David Cirocchi and Sevak Asatrián.

After exploring how an abstract idea can be transformed into a tangible architectural proposal, it was time to show how each student managed to translate initial intuitions into diagrams, plans, and sections capable of explaining a project. The exercise consisted of starting from a plot in Valencia’s historic center, where an existing disused industrial warehouse is present, and proposing a non-residential space. Students were free to choose the program, as the focus of the exercise was not the program itself, but the research process.

The proposed design exercise emerged from a methodology that connects thinking and materiality, closely aligned with the spirit of the “Hacer para Pensar” module. From this perspective, students worked not only on the technical aspects, but also on a more intuitive and manual dimension that helps build an idea from its essence. Through this process, each proposal demonstrated how abstraction can be transformed into an architectural concept with structure, intention, and coherence.

During the presentations, the importance of integrating different tools—models, drawings, diagrams, and spatial simulations—became evident in shaping thought. The methodology developed by Cirocchi and Asatrián, focused on understanding how materials and hands-on practices influence the early stages of design, allowed the projects to gain depth and clarity. Many students discovered that working with their hands and visualizing space through a three-dimensional approach helped them solve problems and make design decisions more precisely.

Overall, the exercise helped consolidate a way of working that combines creativity, technical analysis, and the ability to synthesize ideas. This week’s presentations showcased not only formal outcomes, but also thought processes: how the main idea is identified, structured, and transformed into the foundation of a solid architectural project. This experience marks an important step in their education, reinforcing a methodology they will be able to apply at any stage of the design process and that will support them in the challenges ahead this term.
