Designed by the Portuguese practice Correia/Ragazzi Arquitectos, the Czech Tile is a modular ceramic piece that reinvents Portuguese tradition through an interplay of opposing reliefs, geometric volumes, and chiaroscuro.

The Czech Tile originated as an innovative proposal developed in 2009 for the Remade project. Its core concept centers on the dialogue between two complementary pieces in a basic format: one designed in high relief and the other in low relief. This contrast breaks away from the typical flatness of conventional ceramics, turning vertical surfaces into dynamic, interactive facades that respond to incident light.

From a design and materiality perspective, the geometry of the pieces was meticulously calculated to optimize both aesthetics and technical performance. To guarantee a uniform firing process and prevent warping or cracking during manufacturing, the pieces maintain a constant internal thickness. Furthermore, the glazed finish enhances light reflections, multiplying subtle shifts in color and shadow throughout the day.

One of the Czech Tile’s most compelling qualities is its high compositional versatility and architectural adaptability. Because it relies on a simple modular pattern, it offers countless layout options for both interior spaces and exterior envelopes. A standout example of its large-scale application is the Marechal 720 residential project in Porto, where the facade cladding earned international recognition, receiving the Silver Medal in San Francisco, USA.

Ultimately, Correia/Ragazzi’s design reinterprets the historical use of tiles in Iberian architecture from a contemporary perspective. By converting a two-dimensional cladding into a sculptural skin capable of generating texture and visual rhythm, the Czech Tile demonstrates how innovation in ceramic detailing can enrich the overall spatial perception of a building.
