As part of the MArch postgraduate program in industrialized architecture, Enrique Alario delivered the session titled “From Traditional Construction to Industrialized Construction.”

This class offered a clear, direct overview filled with real-world examples that connected seamlessly with the day-to-day reality of the sector from its most innovative perspective. It functioned as an immersion into how the way we design and build is changing.

Enrique compared traditional processes with current industrialized systems, explaining how construction no longer has to be an unpredictable, slow environment dependent on many manual trades; instead, it can become a controlled, efficient, almost surgical process. He spoke about standardization, millimetric precision, and how digitalization has made it possible for every phase—from design to assembly—to be coordinated with a level of accuracy that once seemed like science fiction.

He then focused on a key idea: the culture of prototyping and the importance of thinking about architecture as a product, not just a project. Industrialization, he explained, not only improves timelines and costs, but also opens the door to much more consistent quality. He approached this from a highly practical standpoint, showing how these changes affect decision-making, team coordination, and the role of the architect within the process.

As part of this practical vision, Enrique shared experiences from his own professional work, including several collaborations carried out for NIU Houses. Used as concrete examples to ground the concepts, these projects helped visualize the processes that represent one of the major shifts in contemporary architecture. What stood out was seeing how the principles he discussed—modularity, prefabrication, resource optimization—operate in real situations, not just in theory.

The session concluded with a reflection that left everyone thinking: industrialization is not just a trend, but a profound change in the way we build. Above all, it is an opportunity for future architects to work with greater control, higher quality, and more creativity. An inspiring class that confirms why the postgraduate program in industrialized architecture is so relevant right now.
