As part of the MArch Postgraduate Program in Industrialized Architecture, and led by Jaime Gorgues, the “Industrial Packaging” session took place, focusing on highlighting the value of housing understood as a logistical product.
During the session, topics such as fabrication or production, component packaging, transport, and on-site assembly were discussed. Special emphasis was placed on the paradigm shift that industrialization brings to housing, moving away from conventional construction—which is characterized as fragmented and requiring numerous on-site adjustments—toward a controlled supply chain where decisions regarding packaging and transport condition even the very design of the project.
Packaging, used to protect components from physical and weather damage, must also be designed with space optimization in mind during transport. Furthermore, it must facilitate the tracking or traceability of parts at all times and guarantee an efficient and safe assembly sequence.
Logistics and costs were also addressed, highlighting that transport and handling can limit the system just as much as the factory itself. On this point, the importance of analysis was explained, emphasizing that it must focus on the total cost of the process rather than just the unit price of the product or the packaging, thereby encompassing purchasing, stock, or losses due to breakage. Similarly, the value of sustainability and the circular economy was highlighted, proposing the measurement of the materials’ full life cycle and the goal of minimizing construction waste through returnable packaging systems, ecodesign, and materials with a low ecological footprint.
This session served to highlight the productive efficiency of the industry and its processes of standardization, modulation, and packaging logistics on a larger scale than what is typically associated with packaging, while always taking into account aspects such as habitability, context, the user, and beauty itself.
