This Monday, September 22, the University of Granada is hosting an important institutional event with the presence of the Royal Academy of Engineering, which has chosen the Granada venue to hold one of its main events of the year.

The day began with the signing of a collaboration agreement between both institutions, followed by a solemn ceremony in which architect and professor Juan Domingo Santos was awarded the title of Laureate Engineer, in recognition of his outstanding academic and professional career.

Before the official start of the events, the rector of the UGR, Pedro Mercado Pacheco, the president of the Royal Academy of Engineering, Jaime Domínguez Abascal, and Santos himself held a press conference in the Rectors’ Hall. During the meeting, they highlighted the links between engineering, architecture, and the university, underlining the importance of figures such as Juan Domingo Santos, who have successfully built bridges between technical and cultural thinking in the field of design.

The distinction awarded today recognizes Santos’ contribution both in academia and professional practice, particularly for his ability to integrate architecture, landscape, and engineering with a sensitive and committed perspective. In addition to his work at the University of Granada, Santos is a regular lecturer in the MArch programs in Valencia, where he shares his experience with new generations of architects and designers in an international context. His work has been key in projects such as the Alhambra Atrium (together with Álvaro Siza) or the recovery of the San Isidro Sugar Factory.

The signing of the agreement between the UGR and the Royal Academy of Engineering strengthens both institutions’ commitment to academic excellence, knowledge transfer, and collaboration in training and research programs. Juan Domingo Santos’ presence at this event not only brought a local and emotional dimension to the ceremony but also an international projection that reaffirms the importance of fostering an architecture committed to place, time, and memory.
