Large Contemporary Art Center by RCR Arquitectes on Île Seguin

The new Large contemporary art center, designed by Pritzker Prize winners RCR Arquitectes, opens its doors in Paris to transform a former industrial island into a vibrant cultural hub along the Seine.

The 5,000-square-meter building catches the eye with its facade clad in Corten steel and anodized aluminum. Rather than opting for a conventional structure, RCR Arquitectes, in collaboration with CALQ Architecture, chose an elevated and sinuous volume that uses louvered screens to filter natural light, integrating views of the landscape and the river into the visitor’s journey.

At the heart of the project lies a central volume that smoothly organizes all circulation. The main space is a large 1,000-square-meter exhibition hall completely free of columns, complemented by two more intimate galleries, a spacious seven-meter-high atrium, a café, a bookstore, educational spaces, and panoramic terraces.

Inside, the experience is designed to be varied and dynamic depending on the scale of each room. Visitors can transition from cozy spaces to grand, open-volume areas, enjoying an atmosphere where filtered light and views to the outside foster a continuous, harmonious dialogue between art and the natural surroundings.

Located within La Pointe des Arts complex, the art center reclaims the grounds formerly occupied by the historic Renault factories. It is a timeless piece of work that demonstrates how contemporary architecture can breathe new life into industrial spaces and become a modern cultural landmark for the city.
