António Choupina, Portuguese architect and founder of the studio CH.A (CHoupina.Arquitectos), recently visited the Espai Alfaro to give a lecture as part of the MArch programs.

Choupina is widely recognised for his close collaboration with Álvaro Siza on major cultural projects, as well as for his work as a curator in prestigious institutions.

During his visit, he revisited the early years of Álvaro Siza alongside Fernando Távora. He explained how, from a very young age, the master began to design independently with the guidance and influence of his mentor. From there, Choupina analysed several of Siza’s most iconic works, unpacking their conceptual and architectural richness, and offered insights into the buildings that students will have the opportunity to visit in Porto. Choupina also shared how Siza’s work has influenced contemporary architecture, reviewing some of his most emblematic projects and reflecting on the spaces visited during his trip to Porto.

The lecture was also a moment to reflect on how Siza has left his mark on subsequent generations of architects. Choupina drew connections between Siza’s early projects and his more recent work, fostering a profound dialogue with the students. The discussion extended beyond the scheduled time thanks to the students’ incisive questions, which enriched the conversation on architectural legacy and relevance.

Choupina, who graduated from the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Porto and founded CH.A in 2010, has developed a distinguished career, including interventions such as the restoration of the Crypt of Charles V in Granada and the Sverre Fehn Pavilion in Norway. In collaboration with Siza, he has participated in international cultural projects such as the Álvaro Siza Pavilion at the China International Furniture Fair, working alongside institutions such as Aedes Berlin, the Vitra Design Museum and the Aga Khan Network. Additionally, as a curator he has promoted exhibitions at the Serralves Museum, Espai Alfaro and the Marques da Silva Foundation, and has contributed to numerous publications that blend architecture, art and philosophy.
