The Italo-Portuguese architecture studio Correia/Ragazzi visited Valencia to deliver a lecture addressed to MArch students. On this occasion, they presented a selection of their most relevant works and shared the influences, interests, and concerns that shape their professional practice.

During the talk, they explored in depth the period of collaboration between Graça Correia and the Portuguese architect and Pritzker Prize laureate Eduardo Souto de Moura, with whom she worked between 1989 and 1995. They also referred to some of their main sources of inspiration, mentioning key figures in Portuguese architecture such as Ruy D’Athouguia and Álvaro Siza. The lecture also opened up to a broader reflection on transdisciplinarity, incorporating references to creators from other fields such as Robert Mapplethorpe, Fernando Pessoa, and Laurie Anderson.

They also spoke about the transmission of knowledge and the way ideas evolve and transform over time. This process was illustrated through examples from music and art, such as Billie Eilish and Michael Jackson—both influenced in turn by Fred Astaire—or the work of Picasso, strongly shaped by references such as Velázquez, Goya, and Manet. Likewise, and returning to their direct references, they pointed out the importance of architects such as Schinkel and Mies van der Rohe in the construction of their architectural outlook.

In the final part of the lecture, they presented some of their most significant projects, including Casa Ricardo Pinto, Casa em Valadares, and the church and parish center of Meinedo, a project that emerged from a competition and which MArch students were able to experience first-hand during their trip to Porto. They also discussed Quinta em Guimarães, the Marechal 720 residential building, also a competition-winning project, and Quinta de Velude, a work of particular importance to them, developed in a natural setting of great singularity.

The Correia/Ragazzi studio was founded in 2005 by Graça Correia and Roberto Ragazzi. Graça, of Portuguese origin, studied at the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Porto (FAUP), one of the country’s most renowned architecture schools. Roberto Ragazzi, of Italian origin, studied at IUAV University of Venice before moving to Porto. With a solid academic background and a shared vision of architecture, they decided to establish their studio there, the city where they currently live and carry out their professional activity. Since its beginnings, Correia/Ragazzi has stood out for a contemporary approach that combines tradition and modernity, with special attention to context, landscape, and the relationship between architecture and its surroundings.
