Architect Emilio Tuñón, recipient of the 2022 National Architecture Award, gave a lecture as part of the MArch programs, focusing on museology as the central theme.

His talk offered a reflection on the role of the museum in society, addressing both its historical and architectural dimensions.

The session began with an overview of the history of museums, from their origins linked to collecting to their consolidation as cultural institutions. Tuñón illustrated this evolution with references such as the Treasure of Villena, emphasizing how the act of collecting represents a way of understanding and preserving memory. He then analyzed the transformation of the museum as a building, presenting paradigmatic cases such as the Museion, the Uffizi Gallery, the British Museum, the Prado Museum, and the Neue Galerie, among others.

Following this historical and typological analysis, Tuñón shared with the attendees a selection of his own projects related to museology, offering a direct insight into his professional experience in this field. Among the works presented were the Museum of Zamora, the Museum of Fine Arts of Castellón, MUSAC (Museum of Contemporary Art of Castilla y León), and the recently inaugurated Gallery of the Royal Collections in Madrid.

Throughout the lecture, Tuñón highlighted the museum’s capacity to generate spaces for dialogue between architecture, art, and society. His approach made clear that, beyond its exhibition function, the museum can become a tool for cultural cohesion and collective reflection—achieved through architecture that interprets context, time, and memory.
