The lecture “Efficient Beauty”, given by Fran Silvestre, director of the MArch programs, recently took place, marking the beginning of module 02_Research.
In this first session, the renowned architect shared with students some of the most representative projects of his studio, Fran Silvestre Arquitectos, as a starting point to reflect on the processes that transform an idea into a built work. Through the analysis of models, he explained how the physical materialization of concepts allows architecture to be understood through the tangible, integrating thought, form, and technique.
During the lecture, Silvestre also discussed the methodology that the studio applies to each project, from the commission phase to execution. He emphasized the importance of dialogue with different craftsmen and how collaboration between disciplines contributes to achieving precise, coherent, and effective architecture. This approach, based on continuous research and experimentation, reflects how each project becomes an opportunity to advance in the pursuit of “efficient beauty.”
An architect specialized in building design at ETSA Valencia and urban planning at the Technische Universiteit Eindhoven, Fran Silvestre holds a PhD Cum Laude from the Polytechnic University of Valencia. Academically, he served as Deputy Director of the School of Architecture at UPV between 2010 and 2012 and is currently a professor of projects at the same institution. In 2018, he held the Regnier Chair at Kansas State University and has been a visiting professor at universities such as Virginia Tech, the University of Buenos Aires, CEDIM, and the University of Seville, among others.
As founder and director of the MArch Postgraduate School in Architecture and Design at the European University of Valencia, Fran Silvestre promotes an education that links thought, technique, and craftsmanship. His lecture marked the beginning of a module focused on research as the driving force behind architectural projects, where students will delve into the study of creative processes that shape contemporary architecture.
