Granada-born architects Juan Domingo Santos and Carmen Moreno visited MArch to deliver lectures on their work, which on this occasion focused primarily on the surroundings of the Alhambra itself.

The session began with the lecture by Juan Domingo Santos, who contextualized his work starting from the creation of his studio and its location in the tower of the San Isidro Sugar Mill, in Granada. He showed the connections he has established with Hadrian’s Villa on one hand and with the Alhambra on the other, introducing this complex and opening the door to the interventions he has carried out within it.

These diverse projects included the Ángel Barrios Legacy Museum—featuring the restoration of the interior space and the subtle intervention of a window without visible frames that opens onto a garden—the window system designed for a selection of openings in the Alhambra, and the unexecuted project for the Access Atrium, the result of a competition he won in collaboration with Álvaro Siza.

Carmen Moreno’s presentation maintained continuity regarding the Alhambra and linked back to the Ángel Barrios Legacy Museum project, where she discussed the intervention on the garden. Furthermore, from an exhibition and museographical perspective, she showcased some of the projects she has carried out in the Palace of Charles V, such as the exhibition for the XIII Spanish Biennial of Architecture and Urbanism.

To conclude, and in line with the content of the 05_Interior Design module, she shared other museographical projects, such as those implemented in the Museum of Andalusia’s Memory (designed by Campo Baeza) and the Science Museum (designed by Carlos Ferrater).
