The Archive is the upcoming exhibition in the Serralves series, taking place from June 6 to September 7, 2025, at the Power Station of Art in Shanghai.
The exhibition is an adaptation of the C.A.S.A. show previously held at Serralves, and it invites visitors to explore the personal archive of the acclaimed Portuguese architect, delving into the roots of his work related to housing and domestic space—from his earliest houses to his most iconic urban proposals.
Jointly curated by the Serralves Museum and the Power Station of Art, the exhibition is directed by architect António Choupina, with the guidance of Álvaro Siza and Carlos Castanheira. It offers a chronological reading of Siza’s work across ten decades. In fact, the exhibition is organized into ten sections—one for each decade—featuring a careful selection of drawings, models, sketches, and documents that reflect the ongoing evolution of Siza’s thinking. It also addresses his role in the post-revolution European social housing movement, as well as expanded projects such as the Portugal Pavilion and his vision for a “House for the City.”
The exhibition is held at this municipal museum of contemporary art located in the Huangpu District, the first state-run museum in the country dedicated exclusively to contemporary art.
Altogether, Álvaro Siza: The Archive is a unique opportunity to delve into the architect’s mind and creative process. Through unpublished pieces and working documents, visitors can appreciate how Siza transformed the concept of inhabiting by integrating simplicity, functionality, and poetic sensitivity into each of his projects.
