On June 13, the exhibition “O século de Gehry” (The Century of Gehry) opened at the Serralves Museum in Porto. The exhibition is dedicated to the career and creative process of the Canadian-American architect and 1989 Pritzker Prize winner, Frank Gehry.
Universally recognized as one of the great masters of contemporary architecture for his ability to break down the boundaries between architecture and sculpture, the exhibition echoes how his work combines instinct and intellect to create unique forms and designs, establishing him as one of the leading exponents of deconstructivism.
The exhibition is organized into eight thematic chapters showcasing nineteen iconic projects (both built and unbuilt). Through sketches and models, the display aims to present architecture as a living and poetic organism. Some of these projects include the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles, the Fondation Louis Vuitton in Paris, and his own residence in Santa Monica. Furniture designed by Gehry himself using cardboard is also on display.
Another remarkable aspect of the exhibition is how it reflects Gehry’s long-standing dialogue with other artists and architects. It places particular emphasis on his friendship with the Portuguese architect and 1992 Pritzker Prize winner, Álvaro Siza—after whom the museum wing hosting the exhibition is precisely named. Both collaborated on the master plan for the ArtCenter College of Design in Pasadena, sparking various cultural exchanges between the United States and Portugal.
“O século de Gehry” is curated by António Choupina, Director of Architecture at Serralves and lecturer for the MArch programs, in collaboration with Gehry Partners and the Getty Research Institute in Los Angeles.
