The Italo-Spanish architecture studio Barozzi Veiga, led by Alberto Veiga and Fabrizio Barozzi—who are also lecturers at MArch—has designed one of the most culturally significant projects developed in Miami in recent years: the Oolite Arts Center.
Although the center is still under development, it is rapidly approaching its final phase. The design of this project aims to reflect the idea of a “village for artists,” organizing a series of interconnected spaces shaped as rooms linked by a rhythm of vertical structures. These structures not only create a unique visual aesthetic but also incorporate elements of vegetation, contributing to the harmonious integration of the center with its natural surroundings. One of the most notable aspects of the design is its focus on balancing public and private spaces, aiming to meet the needs of both the artists who will use the facilities and the wider community.
The Oolite Arts Center will house a wide variety of functions and activities. Its facilities will include the Oolite Arts artist residency, programs focused on film and cinematic arts, as well as lectures and art classes. Additionally, the center will feature 21 individual artist studios where creators can develop their projects, an exhibition gallery to showcase artworks, a theater for performances and presentations, a community garden offering a space for gathering and relaxation, and an accessible rooftop providing panoramic views and a place for social interaction.
This project is not only one of the most culturally significant in Miami, but also marks the first built project by Barozzi Veiga in the United States, representing a major milestone in their international career. The design was developed in collaboration with the local firm Charles H. Benson & Associates, an alliance that has allowed the global architectural vision of Barozzi Veiga to merge with the local knowledge and expertise of Miami-based professionals.
Together, the Oolite Arts Center is shaping up to become a vital space for the city of Miami, promoting artistic creation and cultural exchange among artists, residents, and the broader community.
