In parametric design, the goal is to create and shape through parameters: to use a series of variables that condition an equation to produce a shape or structure. But which ones to choose when the possibilities are endless?

Everything can be parameterized, but there are some specific fields where parameterization improves and modernizes the ideation processes. Architecture is among them.

Through the use of applied mathematics to geometry, we can write the numerical recipe from which to generate the shape or structure of a project in a more sustainable and efficient way. In this way, we define the logical relationships between the parts of what we are projecting, ensuring thus the fulfillment of a series of requirements and restrictions established. As a parameter, any element that can be measured or adjusted can be taken; in the world of architecture, they vary from the simplest conditions, such as the amount of material available, to the most complex, such as an equation to verify structural stresses. But parameters not only condition aesthetics, but also factors such as solar orientation, energy efficiency, or wind behavior, going far beyond mere formal whimsy.

The result of parametric design is the obtaining of hundreds of options capable of fulfilling the given conditions, providing most of the time innovative and uncommon solutions to which human reasoning would have taken much longer to arrive. That is why, when thinking about parametric architecture, we come to mind models with sinusoidal curves, pronounced curves, and geometrically complex forms.

The design process then becomes flexible, where the building is constantly modified in an adaptive manner in pursuit of continuous improvement. But to achieve such an optimized result, a constant flow of information is required, with the more data available about the project, the better.

This methodology, resulting from the intersection of digital technology and the construction industry, likely draws its most direct references from the study Zaha Hadid Architects (founded in 1979) or Gehry Partners, LLP (1962). Both have demonstrated over years of experience that creating seemingly impossible structures does not necessarily mean disconnecting from a controlled, orderly, and reliable manufacturing process, adapting their work to the evolution of times and mastering the transition from 2D drawing to the use of specialized visual programming tools for 3D design, such as Grasshopper or Dynamo.

A path that continues to evolve towards integration with Artificial Intelligence and generative design. Ultimately, parametric architecture is not about replacing human creativity with an algorithm, but about equipping architects with creative tools to explore horizons that were previously simply unattainable.
