Premiere of SIZA: The Documentary

On October 29, the MAAT, Museum of Art, Architecture and Technology in Lisbon, will host the premiere of SIZA, a documentary directed by Augusto Custódio of Gallery.
This film unveils an exceptional archive of more than 500 unpublished images that trace the nine decades of life of the Portuguese architect and Pritzker Prize laureate Álvaro Siza Vieira. From his childhood in Matosinhos, where he began discovering the world through drawing, to his establishment as one of the great masters of architecture, the documentary offers an intimate look at his creative process.
Through a selection of photographs, sketches, and personal notes, SIZA invites the viewer into a reflective space where each image becomes a trace of time. The film does not merely document—it turns time itself into a central character, from Siza’s earliest sketches to his most recent achievements. Every line and gesture reflect the memory and profound meaning of a life devoted to exploring and reinterpreting the world.
This documentary not only celebrates architecture but transforms it into an act of memory. In this process, the idea of the invisible, of what is remembered, becomes an intangible architecture that lives through images and recollections. Custódio, head of the Gallery platform, is also directing another documentary on the studio Fran Silvestre Arquitectos, underscoring his commitment to preserving architectural legacy and exploring new ways of narrating it.
SIZA is a documentary about perception—about what we see and what endures beyond sight—revealing how the architecture of the Portuguese master transcends buildings to become a constant rediscovery of wonder.
