On October 22, 2025, Portuguese architect Eduardo Souto de Moura was awarded the prestigious Praemium Imperiale in the Architecture category.
Before an audience of 160 guests, including ambassadors, past laureates, and figures from the international art world, Souto de Moura received the medal and certificate from Her Imperial Highness Princess Hitachi.
During the ceremony, Takamitsu Kumasaka, advisor to the Japan Art Association, emphasized the role of art —in all its disciplines— as a bridge between cultures and a catalyst for peace and global prosperity. Princess Hitachi then presented the awards to the five laureates in Painting, Sculpture, Architecture, Music, and Theatre/Film, among whom was Souto de Moura, underscoring the cross-disciplinary and prestigious nature of the prize.
For Souto de Moura, this presentation in Tokyo marks an international milestone in an already highly acclaimed career. His architectural approach —deeply rooted in local context, materiality, and a thoughtful reflection on time and place— was specifically highlighted by the Praemium Imperiale jury. During the event, the architect mentioned that reading Junichirō Tanizaki’s essay In Praise of Shadows had influenced his understanding of light and shadow, and he reflected on his experience of Japanese architecture as a bridge between tradition and modernity.
The ceremony was not only a personal recognition for Eduardo Souto de Moura but also a celebration of his commitment to a conscious and timeless architecture. The city of Tokyo and the international arts community paid tribute to his work, honoring one of the leading contemporary figures in the field of architecture.
