The architect and Pritzker Prize laureate Eduardo Souto de Moura has received the 2026 UIA Gold Medal during the World Congress of Architects, in a ceremony held at the Basilica of the Sagrada Familia.
Souto de Moura has been honored for a body of work that stands out for its intelligence, restraint, and social responsibility, and for always steering clear of the architecture of spectacle. Throughout his career, he has built one of the most coherent trajectories on the European scene, featuring highly relevant projects such as the Braga Municipal Stadium, the Casa das Histórias Paula Rego, the Burgo Tower, and the conversion of the Pousada de Santa Maria do Bouro.
Integrated into the congress’s awards agenda, the presentation of this medal celebrates not only the success of an individual career but also a design philosophy based on precision, permanence, and a clear commitment to culture and the environment.
The celebration of the award continues through a program of activities coordinated by the Ordem dos Arquitectos and the Casa da Arquitetura. This has included a session at the Disseny Hub Barcelona on the challenges of contemporary practice—featuring the laureate himself alongside Inês Lobo, Manuel Aires Mateus, and Wilfried Wang—as well as a reception at the Moco Museum, which hosted the ‘Ucronia’ installation dedicated to his architectural production.
This major recognition coincides with the World Congress of Architects, which brings together professionals, researchers, and students in Barcelona under the theme ‘Becoming. Architectures for a Planet in Transition.’ In this context of constant change, the award to Souto de Moura invites us to pause and appreciate a quiet and rigorous discipline capable of engaging in a precise dialogue with time and territory.
