The Punta della Dogana, a former customs house located at the junction of the Grand Canal and the Giudecca Canal, was transformed by Ando into an innovative center for contemporary art. His intervention is marked by minimalism that enhances the building’s original features, integrating modern elements without altering its historical essence.

Next to the Punta della Dogana, Ando designed the Teatrino of Palazzo Grassi, a performance space aimed at offering an intimate and versatile venue for cultural and artistic events. This small theater is respectfully inserted within the palatial context, combining formal simplicity and materials such as polished concrete and wood—hallmarks of Ando’s sober and contemplative style. Acoustics and functionality are carefully balanced to foster reflection and connection with art.

Another key work is his intervention at Palazzo Grassi itself, which involved the restoration and adaptation of the 18th-century palace into a contemporary art museum. Ando preserved the building’s essential historic features while introducing a series of clean, neutral spaces that highlight the artworks on display. His approach integrates architecture with the Venetian environment, achieving a harmonious dialogue between old and new.

These projects reflect Tadao Ando’s philosophy of creating architecture that respects and engages with its context, producing spaces of contemplation and cultural exchange.
