The Domes of Energy, a new project by Emilio Tuñón

Emilio Tuñón, National Architecture Award winner and a leading figure in contemporary architecture, will be giving a new lecture in the MArch programs this Friday.
His name is once again in the spotlight thanks to one of his most recent and significant works, both architecturally and territorially: the new Solarig headquarters at Las Cúpulas de la Energía in Garray, Soria.
Located in the Parque Empresarial del Medio Ambiente (PEMA), the project breathes new life into an architectural complex originally conceived by Tuñón alongside Luis Moreno Mansilla and Carlos Martínez de Albornoz. The intervention adapts one of the pre-existing spherical domes to house Solarig’s new offices, spread across seven floors and over 2,000 square meters. Inside, it features collaborative workspaces, a library, communal areas, and an advanced Global Control Center that manages renewable energy facilities in more than twelve countries. The architectural strategy emphasizes sustainability, incorporating biomass for climate control and intelligent natural and LED lighting systems.
Beyond its functional and energy efficiency, the project stands out for its ability to blend innovation with local identity. The design respects and enhances the formal language of the original domes while integrating the new corporate program’s requirements. This dialogue between the existing and the contemporary turns Solarig’s new headquarters into a symbol of commitment to ecological transition and regional development. Promoted by the Junta de Castilla y León through SOMACyL, the environment aims to become a hub for innovation in clean energy — a goal reinforced by Tuñón’s architecture through materiality and design.
The project in Soria exemplifies Tuñón’s ability to respond to complex contexts with deeply sensitive architectural solutions. Works like this highlight the rigor, formal clarity, and respect for context that define his practice — qualities that will also be reflected in his upcoming session with MArch students.
