One of the most anticipated moments of the academic year is drawing near for the students of the MArch Advanced program in Architecture, Design, and Business Administration: the trip to Japan, which this year will take place from June 16 to 24.
This international experience is an integral part of the academic program and aims to broaden students’ perspectives through direct contact with globally significant architectural and cultural contexts.
During their stay, students will have the opportunity to explore the contemporary architecture of Tokyo, a city in constant transformation where some of the world’s most innovative architectural firms coexist. They will visit landmark works by architects such as Kengo Kuma, SANAA, Shigeru Ban, and Tadao Ando, as well as explore urban spaces that reflect the intensity, pace, and complexity of present-day Japan.
However, the trip will not only focus on the present. The journey will also take them to Kyoto, the former imperial capital, where traditional Japanese architecture lives on in temples, gardens, and dwellings that preserve a deep connection with nature and a profound sense of time. This part of the trip will allow students to take a true journey into the past and understand how the principles of Japanese design have influenced many contemporary architectural movements.
This contrast between modernity and tradition makes the Japan trip a unique and enriching experience, where students will not only observe architecture, but also reflect on the values, scales, and ways of life that shape it. Ultimately, it is an opportunity to find inspiration, learn, and enhance their own approach as future professionals in design and architecture.
