On October 2, 2025, at 7:00 p.m. in the Auditorium (Garden Level), COAM will host the event titled “The Obsession with Drawing: The Architecture of Álvaro Siza.”
This will be an opportunity to explore in depth the work of Portuguese architect Álvaro Siza, a central figure in contemporary architecture, whose design approach is closely tied to drawing, place, material, and form. The event aims not only to review his most emblematic projects but also to reflect on the legacy of his way of seeing and building, from Portugal to his international influence.
Among the speakers will be professionals committed to teaching and architectural reflection connected to Álvaro Siza, including Carmen Moreno and Juan Domingo Santos, both linked to the MArch programs. Their participation adds a rigorous academic perspective to the event: Carmen Moreno is recognized for her teaching work and architectural critique, while Juan Domingo Santos combines his professional practice with his position as a professor of architectural design, offering a perspective that connects theory and practice.
Completing the list of speakers are Nuno Grande and Juan Miguel Hernández León, with the session moderated by Carlos Quintáns Eirás. The program includes an institutional welcome by Sigfrido Herráez, Dean of COAM, and Manuel Beltrán Pedreira, Director General of Institutional Relations and Strategic Projects of the Madrid City Council. These institutional elements strengthen the cultural and institutional character of the event, integrating architectural reflection into the local scene.
For those interested, this is an ideal opportunity to confront ideas about drawing as a design tool, especially in the context of postgraduate or master’s studies, where education seeks to go beyond the technical to embrace notions of sensitivity, place, and drawing as a form of thinking. In addition, the event creates a bridge between professional and academic practice, providing a space for critical dialogue.
