Traveling is an essential part of the learning experience at MArch. Through the trips included in programs, students discover cities from a professional perspective that goes beyond the tourist experience.
Visiting iconic buildings, exploring neighborhoods with a critical eye, getting to know local studios, and attending talks by professionals offers a deep immersion in the architecture, design, and culture of each place — helping students understand how cities are built and the ideas that shape them.
Each destination brings a unique perspective. In Porto, students explore masterpieces by Álvaro Siza and Eduardo Souto de Moura, key figures in Portuguese architectural thinking. In Venice, the historical setting and the Biennale provide a direct connection to the forefront of global art and architecture. Barcelona becomes an urban laboratory where the legacy of Gaudí, the grid of the Eixample, and contemporary creative energy all coexist. And in Milan, the capital of industrial design, students attend the Salone del Mobile and the Fuorisalone — trendsetting events on the international stage.
The trip to Japan marks a turning point. There, students discover a fascinating balance between tradition and technology, visiting works by architects such as Tadao Ando and SANAA, and learning from Japanese design in its original context. In Switzerland, the focus shifts to construction rigor and precision, characteristic of studios like Herzog & de Meuron or Valerio Olgiati. These journeys offer deep insights into both European and Asian architectural cultures.
Finally, Olot and Lisbon complete the experience. In Olot, students take part in a workshop with RCR Arquitectes, where nature and the landscape become raw material for design. Lisbon, on the other hand, reveals a human-scale urbanism and richly nuanced architecture, where tradition, renewal, and a special sensitivity to public space coexist — all within the context of a workshop at the studio of Manuel Aires Mateus. Each destination leaves a mark and opens new ways of seeing and designing. That’s why, at MArch, traveling also means learning to see.
