The proposal SPOLIA, presented by FROBEL ESTUDIO SLP, has been selected as the winning project for the exhibition design of the Spanish Pavilion at the 20th Venice Architecture Biennale, which will be open to the public from May 8 to November 21, 2027.
The Competition Jury particularly praised the proposal’s accurate interpretation of the Biennale’s overall theme—“Do Architecture – For the Possibility of Coexistence Facing a Real Reality”—by directly linking architectural practice with “making” and the physical dimension. The intervention places physical execution, the construction process, and the human scale as fundamental pillars of the contemporary discipline.
To reflect the richness of the national context, SPOLIA aims to represent the territorial and disciplinary diversity of Spain through an open call. Through this public call, pieces created by architects and artisans linked to architectural practice will be selected, highlighting the plurality of ways of thinking, making, and creating architecture today.
As an essential part of their educational itinerary, students in the MBA MArch Advanced in Architecture, Design and Business Administration program visit the Spanish Pavilion during the academic trip to Venice included in their curriculum. This stay allows them to analyze firsthand an exhibition proposal of international relevance and explore the intersections between design theory, artisanal production, and cultural management.
The direct experience at the Giardini and Arsenale venues turns this trip into a unique opportunity to connect classroom learning with the most avant-garde trends in global architectural debate. In this way, visiting the Spanish Pavilion provides students with a critical perspective on the role of architecture, craftsmanship, and contemporary thought in shaping the built environment of the 21st century.
