Within the M06_Graphic and Product module, collector and designer Andrés Alfaro Hofmann delivered a lecture and launched a workshop for students across the various MArch programs.

During the lecture, he shared examples that illustrate how design enters our homes through different objects and how these evolve over time, adapting to the changing needs of society at any given moment and integrating ever more harmoniously with the spaces they inhabit.

Following the presentation, he presented the students with a workshop centered on designing of a office or kitchen object. Building upon his previous lecture analyzing the historical evolution of various everyday objects, Alfaro Hofmann challenges students to question the very anatomy of an item. The new alternatives proposed must rethink its morphology and materiality without ever compromising its original function or technical efficiency. To achieve this, the creative process and the pursuit of an effective aesthetic are structured under the theoretical framework of Dieter Rams’ 10 Principles of Good Design, compelling students to seek solutions that are honest, meticulous, and expressed with the least amount of design possible.

Partner and Director of Interior Design at the Fran Silvestre Arquitectos studio, Andrés Alfaro Hofmann has an extensive career linked to the sector’s leading institutions. He is a member of the College of Interior Designers of the Valencian Community (CDICV), a member of ADI-FAD since 1990, and serves as a trustee for both the Fundació Història del Disseny and the Fundació del Disseny de la Comunitat Valenciana. His career spans design, interior design, research, and collecting, focusing much of his work on the study of the domestic environment.

Since the late 1970s, he has gathered one of the most important industrial design collections in Europe. Known as the Alfaro Hofmann Collection, it features over 5,000 pieces focused primarily on the evolution of household appliances. His preservation work was honored in 2022 with the ADI Cultura Trayectoria Award, a recognition that highlights his ongoing effort to conserve and promote the heritage value of objects, using his collection as an essential tool to explain the evolution and significance of the industrial design profession.
