Students from the MArch master’s programs and the postgraduate program in Design and Digital Innovation recently attended a lecture by Pepe Gimeno, a leading figure in the field of graphic design in Spain.
The session, held at the Centre Octubre, offered students a unique opportunity to gain first-hand insight into the creative and methodological approach of one of the most influential designers on the national scene.
With a long-established professional career spanning several decades, Pepe Gimeno has received numerous awards for his contribution to graphic design. His career includes collaborations with prominent public and private institutions, many of them linked to the world of architecture. Among his most recent projects are the creation of the visual identity for the Casa de la Arquitectura and his earlier work for Roca, further solidifying his role as a creator of institutional graphic benchmarks.
During his talk, the designer shared his approach to the design process, structuring it into four conceptual blocks. Through this framework, he presented some of his most iconic works, such as the graphic identity for Les Corts Valencianes, the visual system developed for EMT Valencia, the graphic design for NUDE, and the aforementioned collaboration with Roca. Each example served to illustrate his rigorous and sensitive approach, based on visual coherence, functionality, and symbolic depth.
In addition to his applied graphic design work, Pepe Gimeno also shared his interest in artistic creation and experimental typography. In this regard, he introduced students to “Pepe”, a typeface he designed inspired by an artwork by Andy Warhol, reflecting his ongoing dialogue between art and design. His presentation offered a broad and profound perspective on a discipline in which form and content merge to create visual solutions with high communicative impact.
