Architect Luisa Moura, from the Souto de Moura studio, visited MArch to give a lecture titled “Post-architect architecture: a return to Eduardo Souto de Moura’s first houses.”
In her talk, she reviewed some of the studio’s most significant residential projects, such as the houses in Ponte de Lima, Moledo, Serra da Arrábida, and the house in Braga, highlighting their approaches to intimacy, relationship with the landscape, and the contemporary reinterpretation of architectural roots.
During her presentation, Luisa emphasized how these early houses embody a special sensitivity to context — topography, local materials, constructive tradition — and also highlighted the architectural, literary, and cultural influences that have accompanied the studio’s creative process over the years. According to her, this conceptual foundation has allowed these projects to withstand the passage of time without losing relevance.
Eduardo Souto de Moura received the Pritzker Architecture Prize in 2011 — considered the most prestigious award in architecture — in recognition of a body of work that combines modernity with local traditions. In 2025, he was also honored with the Praemium Imperiale, an international prize that validates his career as a global reference in the discipline.
Luisa Moura has been part of MArch since its second edition and combines her professional practice with an academic career. She is currently working on her doctoral thesis, underscoring her commitment to theoretical reflection on architecture alongside practical work. This dual focus — professional and academic — allows architecture to be understood not only as construction, but also as critical thinking, tradition, and experimentation.
