The creative studio PalauGea was present at MArch to share some of its most important projects with the students, including the publishing company Gràffica. On this occasion, with the presence of Víctor Palau, the students had the opportunity to learn about some of his projects as a design studio, as well as his increasingly consolidated career in the publishing world.

This week the students of the MArch programme had the honour of welcoming Ibán Ramón, one of today's most outstanding and award-winning graphic designers. With an impressive career backed by prestigious awards such as the LAUS awards, those of the Designers' Association of the Valencian Community (ADCV), Gràffica, the Type Directors Club of New York and the Red Dot Design Award, Ramón has established himself as a reference in the field of graphic design.

Iconic houses of contemporary architecture

The new architecture of the 20th century brought with it great architectural projects that today stand as icons and are also examples of the mastery of some of the most renowned architects and studios of the time. Examples include Mies van Der Rohe's Farnsworth House, Frank Lloyd Wright's Cascade House and Le Corbusier's Ville Savoye. In the same way that we find these remarkable projects in the last century, we can also find residential architecture built in the 21st century that we can also consider to be (or will be) architectural icons.

Houses in Ponte de Lima by Eduardo Souto de Moura

Renowned Portuguese architect and Pritzker Prize winner Eduardo Souto de Moura has left an indelible mark on the architectural landscape with his project for two houses at Quinta de Anquião. Set in the picturesque surroundings of Ponte de Lima in northern Portugal, these homes reflect Souto de Moura’s mastery of integrating contemporary design with the historical and natural context.

The renowned Japanese architect Kengo Kuma, whose projects were visited during his trip to Japan as part of the MArch Advanced programme in architecture, design and business administration, was commissioned to intervene in the interior of one of the most emblematic buildings in the city of Barcelona: the Batlló house, one of the most representative works of the architect Antoni Gaudí.

Microarchitecture Workshop with Estudi{H}ac

José Manuel Ferrero, founder of Estudi{H}ac, recognised with numerous awards for his work and career, has once again participated in MArch with a presentation in which he shared some of his projects with MArch students and at the same time proposed a workshop that has been developed during these days in collaboration with the company Kriskadecor, with which an exercise of the same characteristics was carried out during the previous course.

Lecture by Steven Holl Architects in MArch

For the first time, the MArch graduate school has been able to count on the presence of one of the most relevant studios on the international scene: Steven Holl Architects. Led by his partner and Project Director in China, Roberto Bannura, the students were able to enjoy an intervention that was also a deep immersion in the phenomenology applied to contemporary architecture.

Álvaro Siza Transforms the Leça do Balio Monastery in Porto with a White Concrete Angular Extension

Renowned Portuguese architect Álvaro Siza has completed an angular white concrete extension to the Leça do Balio Monastery, with the aim of providing "a new landmark" for this historic site. This work, carried out in collaboration with landscape architect Sidonio Pardal, expands the space available to visitors and houses the headquarters of the cultural entity Fundação Livraria Lello.

The resolution of the ADI FAD awards in the 2024 call has been resolved with pleasant news for studios linked to MArch. These awards are highly respected within the design community and aim to highlight and promote good design and its relevance in everyday life and in industrial and economic development.

Once again this year, the students of the MArch master's programmes and the MArch postgraduate programme in design and digital innovation have had the privilege of listening to Pepe Gimeno, one of the greatest voices in the world of design and, in particular, graphic design. The event took place at the Centre Octubre and the students were able to learn from Pepe Gimeno's creativity as well as from the work processes developed for the creation of his different projects.

Barozzi Veiga wins a new competition for the Astoria in Malaga

The Italian-Spanish studio Barozzi Veiga, which recently won the competition for the art museum in Gothenburg, has once again won another competition, this time in Malaga. The winning proposal stands out for its innovative and sensitive approach to the site's historical heritage. Barozzi Veiga has conceived a design that allows the archaeological remains found on the Astoria site to be accessible to the public through a separate access from the Plaza de la Merced.

Casa de la Arquitectura’s stand at the Madrid Book Fair

In this new edition of the Madrid Book Fair, which takes place during the first weeks of June in the Retiro Park and which counts on the numerous participation of publishers and organisations from all over the peninsula, the recently created Casa de la Arquitectura is taking part for the first time, in collaboration with the Arquia Foundation.

The renowned designer and interior designer Francesc Rifé, whom the MArch students already visited last January during their trip to Barcelona, recently shared his knowledge in an inspiring lecture addressed to the students of the master's and postgraduate programmes in design and digital innovation. During his visit, he shared some of his projects showing his experiences and perspectives.

DVEIN begins its workshop for MArch students

The creative studio Dvein, made up of Carlos Pardo and Teo Guillem, which every year collaborates in MArch as part of module 04_Digital Innovation, gave a talk at the Centre Octubre in which they showed some of their most relevant works produced for brands as renowned as the Japanese Shisheido or the French Jean-Paul Gaultier, to name but a few.

The One, Souto de Moura’s first residential project in Lisbon

Eduardo Souto de Moura, who was awarded the Pritzker Prize in 2011, has completed his first residential project in Lisbon. Although he had previously executed other works in the Portuguese capital, this is the first in this area, which, as a starting point, is already a milestone.

Architectural Visualization Workshop

Angelo Brollo and Victor Gonzalez, members of FSA LAB, have started the Architectural Visualization Workshop with which they intend to transmit their knowledge of 3DS Max to the students of the different MArch programs. During the sessions, they share the working methodology used in the studio of Fran Silvestre Arquitectos, focused on the generation of high quality renderings for architectural and product design projects.

MArch Advanced’s trip to Switzerland

The students of the MArch Advanced program in architecture, design and business administration have traveled to Switzerland to get to know the contemporary architecture of one of the most attractive European countries from this point of view, completing the circuit of six trips included in this program.

First prize in UPorto’s international competition for NOARQ

The Portuguese studio NOARQ, with its director Zé Carlos Nunes de Oliveira, has been recognized with the first prize in the international public design competition for the Asprela student residence belonging to the Universidades do Porto. The resolution of the competition was made public on May 25.

Casa Decor Awards recognize the professional career of Francesc Rifé

On May 21, the Casa Decor awards ceremony took place at the Rosewood Villa Magna Hotel in Madrid, this being its twelfth edition. The Casa Decor awards are given in the framework of Casa Decor, the prestigious exhibition of interior design, design, trends and lifestyle held annually in Madrid, Spain.

In this course 2023 2024 students have been able to enjoy the first edition of the Stone Workshop developed in collaboration with the company Nerinea. For the same, they have traveled to their facilities, where they have lconocido first hand its production chain and its product, in addition to being able to experience their textures and see how they face new challenges by offering innovative solutions.

Siza’s exhibition at the Calouste-Gulbenkian Foundation

The performance of the architect Siza, who has garnered so many accolades throughout his professional career, has achieved success in other creative fields such as sculpture and drawing. In recent years, several exhibitions have been held, such as the “AlfaroSiza” exhibition that took place at Espai Alfaro between May and December 2018. Now, a new exhibition focused on his drawings is taking place.

Ephemeral architectures as commissioned work

Ephemeral architecture is a creative expression that focuses on the temporary construction of structures and spaces designed for a specific purpose for a limited period of time. Expo Osaka 2025

The new edition of the World Expo, to be held next year 2025, will take place in the Japanese city of Osaka. This huge city will host, between April 13 and October 13, what is considered to be the largest international exposition ever held. Spain already hosted those of Seville in 1992 and Zaragoza in 2008.

Presentation of the RIA Foundation by David Chipperfield

On May 9 took place the presentation of the RIA Foundation, an eco-social project that David Chipperfield has been building in recent years, in collaboration with part of his team based in Galicia. The presentation took place at the new headquarters of the Arquia Foundation designed by Emilio Tuñón.

Gothenburg Art Museum by Barozzi Veiga

MArch speakers Fabrizio Barozzi and Alberto Veiga, in collaboration with local architects Hermansson Hiller Lundberg Arkitekter and landscape architect Peter Korn, won the competition to renovate and extend the Göteborgs Konstmuseum. The intervention focuses on a respectful and complementary relationship to the existing museum, projecting an extension as an elongated plinth in front of the south facade of the historic building.

CICA’s tribute to Álvaro Siza

On May 6, the Serralves Foundation was the venue for a tribute to Álvaro Siza, which was attended by Siza himself, Wilfried Wang (president of CICA), and Ana Tostões (member of CICA and president of AICA_PT - International Association of Art Critics, Portugal).

15th Anniversary of Gràffica

Ana Gea and Víctor Palau, MArch speakers, are celebrating, as their Gràffica project, fully consolidated worldwide, is now 15 years old. It was in 2009 when they began their journey in digital format, heir to a previous project developed by Víctor Palau that had up to 15,000 readers. In 2016 they also began to give physical form to their publications, creating the magazine Gràffica.

The multiple award-winning designer and MArch lecturer Ibán Ramón has been in charge of redesigning the new image of the renowned designer and 2022 National Design Award Winner Inma Bermúdez. Ibán Ramón Rodríguez is a professional designer active since 1994 and founder of his own studio in 2001, specialized in corporate graphics, editorial design and visual communication.

MArch Advanced programme trip to Japan

The students of the MArch Advanced programme in architecture, design and business administration are currently on a trip to Japan, included in the master's programme, along with students from Venice, Switzerland, Barcelona, Porto and Milan, as well as workshops in Lisbon and Olot. On this trip, the students are visiting Tokyo, enjoying the architecture of the Ginza, Shibuya and Shinjuku districts, mainly, and getting to know in situ projects by architects such as Kengo Kuma, Tadao Ando, Sanaa, Kisho Kurokawa, Toyo Ito, Jun Mitsui and Kenzo Tange.
